Einleitung1.1 Aufgabenstellung und VorgehensweiseThema der folgenden Hausarbeit ist das von Thomas Gainsborough gemalte Doppelbildnis von Mr. und Mrs. Hallett, besser bekannt als „The morning walk“. Das Gemälde ist in Öl auf Leinwand gemalt und trägt die Maße 236,2 cm * 179,1 cm. Gainsborough fertigte es im Jahr 1785 an, heute befindet es sich in der National Gallery, London.William Hallett (1764 - 1842) und Elizabeth Hallett, geb. Stephen (1763/4 - 1833) heirateten am 30. Juli 1785. Das Gemälde ist vermutlich wenig später entstanden. Leider konnte ich keine Quellen ausfindig machen, in denen nähere Informationen zu den Auftraggebern standen. Es ist lediglich das genannte Hochzeitsdatum und der, in der folgenden Provenienz aufgeführte Preis von 126 Pfund überliefert, die Mr. Hallett an den Künstler zahlte. Dieser Betrag war jedoch ein Standartpreis für Gainsboroughs Doppelportraits in Lebensgröße und gibt somit auch keine spezielle Information über das Gemälde wieder.Da ich in der Literatur keine spezielle Interpretation des Bildes finden konnte, werde ich eine genaue Ikonographie hier außer Acht lassen. Da die Deutung der Bildelemente in Bezug auf das Bildthema (Hochzeit) also weniger bedeutsam zu sein scheint, werde ich mich in der folgenden Arbeit, nach einer kurzen Biografie, auf eine genaue Bildbeschreibung und Analyse beschränken. Anschließend möchte ich auf die Einordnung in das Gesamtwerk Gainsboroughs eingehen und das Gemälde mit denen anderer Künstler seiner näheren Umgebung vergleichen.
